Leading Balmain photographer captures the heart of the suburb

North Sullivan’s photographic exhibition Local Heroes opens at Gallery Xposure in Rozelle on 20 October.

The show features revealing portraits of Balmain identities, some famous, some not so famous, all of whom Sullivan believes have made a meaningful contribution to the local community. From politicians to buskers, Sullivan captures his subjects with an informality that belies the masterful complexity of his rich illustrative style.

Sullivan sees his project as a local show with outward appeal. “I wanted to exhibit pictures that had a direct connection with the people living and working in the district while still appealing to the wider audience. It is my way of paying tribute to all those wonderful people who are the colour and vibrancy of the inner west.” He continues, “Balmain is one of the most diverse communities in Australia and it is a privilege to be able to help celebrate the suburb’s unique character.”

As a long time supporter of public education, in particular the district’s Sydney Secondary College, Sullivan is donating the profits from the show to the school’s P&C Association. A fundraising opening is also planned for Friday 22 October from 6.00pm and the Balmain community is invited to come and enjoy a glass of Chardonnay with their neighbors.

The P&C is running a raffle in conjunction with the show and the prize is your own personal portrait by Sullivan.

Sullivan is one of Australia’s most respected commercial photographers. Working mainly in advertising, he has produced such memorable projects as the original Qantas Children’s Choir pictures and more recently the irreverent Carlton Draught advertising campaign Made from Beer (Brewed in a Big Metal Thing). Other campaigns included the Olympic Torch Relay in 2000 and the Red Cross House on the Mekong for BlueScope Steel in February this year. His most recent assignment for the Post Box division of Australia Post can be seen in newspapers and post offices now.
